We left the Rio Grande Valley and drove north to Bastrop State Park, which is 30 miles east of Austin Texas. We were met there by our friend Sarah and her friend John. They drove their Bluebird RV over from Katy Texas. I worked with Sarah for many years in Virginia Beach before she moved to Texas. On our first day we checked out the Copper Shot Distillery in Bastrop and sampled the moonshine infused with various fruits and other flavors. We then had a nice catfish and shrimp dinner at Paw Paws, but the highlight of the meal were the deep fried deviled eggs. We ended the night with Josie giving a lesson on how to play Mah Jongg.

Sarah and John are true campers and the next day they cooked up a lunch of beef stew and apple cobbler in dutch ovens over an open fire. That evening we drove into Austin and viewed the bats that fly out of the Congress Bridge. We then hit two of the many night spots with live music, The Continental Club and the Whitehorse. Sarah and John are working people, so before they left the next day we played another round of Mah Jongg. It was great seeing Sarah and meeting  John.

On Friday our friend Gloria came by for a visit as she is driving east after spending the winter in Arizona. She was joined by her friends Gwen and Kathy. We had a nice lunch at Neighbors Restaurant in Bastrop and then Gloria tried a shot from Copper Shot which was right next door. It was great seeing Gloria and meeting her friends. That evening Josie and I attended the play "Kitchen Witches" at the Bastrop Opera House. I was chosen from the audience to play the part of a judge in a cooking contest and made the most of my five minutes on the stage.

Josie drove the cart for me when I played the scenic Colovista Golf Course. We were paired with two nice local gentlemen, Jim and Larry. The next day we visited the Berdoll Pecan Farm and store and bought chocolate covered and cinnamon roasted pecans. I took Josie's picture with their mascot Miss Pearl, the Squirrel. From there we drove to Lockhart, Texas to view the beautiful county courthouse. We then ate at Black' BBQ, the oldest family owned BBQ in Texas. We had seen it featured on the Food Channel show "Burgers, Brew and Que". Although the turkey and brisket were good they were not the best we had ever eaten. However their jalapeno, cheddar sausage was outstanding. If you have ever traveled in this part of the country you might have been to a convenience store chain called Buc-cee,s. It is like a Seven Eleven on steroids. The one here in Bastrop has 75 gas pumps. Inside they sell everything from Fudge to Jerky  We love the cinnamon rolls from the bakery.

Tomorrow we drive west to Fredricksburg, Texas.
