Mississippi Gulf Coast

In all of our travels over the years, we had never visited the Mississippi Gulf Coast. So we made a short stop on our way east. Twelve years after Hurricane Katrina this area is still in recovery. Many of the older homes built long ago to withstand the Hurricanes are still standing, and are absolutely beautiful. New homes that are being built on lots that were washed clean by Katrina are now being built on stilts up to 20 feet tall. But most of the coast is still vacant lots with for sale signs one right after the other. We saw one that offered a one and a half acre lot for one point two million dollars. Gambling is a big tourist draw on the coast. With many of the famous names in Casinos, like Hard Rock, MGM and Harrah's.

Many of the trees that were broken off by Katrina have been carved into sculptures of everything from Seahorses to Eagles. We had a nice lunch of Raw Oysters and Fried Tomatoes stacked with Crab Cakes at Shaggy's on the breakwater in Pass Christian. Later Josie walked the beach while I took bird pictures.
